University of Lancashire

The University of Central Lancashire can begin dropping the word ‘central’.

We are proudly changing our name to the University of Lancashire. It’s a change that emphasises our enormous pride in our almost 200 years of academic excellence and our deep Lancashire roots.

This isn’t just a name change. As we always have, we’re continuing to develop who we are so we can help our students seize even more opportunities to flourish in education, at work, and for life. You can enjoy a fantastic student experience at our multi-campus, global University with second-to-none student support, hands on learning and a home-from-home feel.

We are pioneering cutting edge research, solving real-world challenges and delivering change. We are shaping graduates to level-up business, and forging industry-leading partnerships creating real impact.

This a very special moment in our history, and the start of an exciting new chapter. Whoever you are, wherever you’re from, you can expect world-class teaching, global impact and a warm welcome. That’s how we do it in Lancashire.

Logo progression

Locally the acronym UCLan is widely used, but less well known outside of the region. This change will make it easier for prospective students, partners, and communities across the UK and abroad better understand who we are and what we stand for.

This change is an indicator of our ambition to drive positive impact across Lancashire and beyond as our 200th anniversary draws near.

The history of our University

Our history can be traced back to 1828 and in four years' time we’ll be celebrating our 200-year anniversary. Within that time, we’ve successfully changed name six times. We believe in the spirit of opportunity for all, which is the same motto and ethos as when we were created as the Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge.
